Biomass - Whitewaters Energy
Biomass is a term used to describe materials such as wood, straw or animal wastes, which were living matter relatively recently, and that may be burned to provide energy.
Commonly used biomass products include logs and trimmings, wood chips, and wood pellets manufactured from waste product from sawmills. Unlike fossil fuels, biomass is considered to be carbon neutral as it absorbs carbon dioxide whilst it grows and then returns it to the atmosphere when it is burned or decomposes.
Biomass is generally burned in either a stand alone stove, which provides heating to a single room, or a dedicated boiler, connected to a central heating and hot water system.
The cost efficiency and carbon savings depend largely on the availability of local suppliers, but if you are able to grow and harvest an energy crop such as willow on your land it is possible to generate 100% of your space and water heating for free.
Modern biomass boilers can operate with existing radiators or underfloor heating systems, and feature self-cleaning, de-ashing and self-filling functions to make operation and maintenance easy for the homeowner.
